The 5 Best Cameos and Guest Appearances in Video Games

Many of us have our favorite characters that we like to consider either figures of our childhood, inspirations in our day dreams or just plain awesome. Many of us have been enthralled when we see our favorite character make a crossover into another realm of media or storyline when worlds collide. Today we will take a look at some of the best cameos and guest appearances in various video games of the past years.

1 – The Entire Super Smash Brothers Cast

The overall best cameo and guest appearance  contender has to be Super Smash Brothers in my mind. While essentially a game based on the concept of throwing all of the favorite Nintendo characters into a ring to duke it out, but the game itself and even its sequels is pulled off so flawlessly. Watching Samus Aran beat the crap out of Pikachu is the stuff dreams are made of.

2 – Darth Vader, Yoda and the Apprentice in Soul Calibur 4

Soul Calibur has always been an excellent fighting franchise that has always had a cameo in the past games, such as Link and Spawn, however Soul Calibur 4realy takes the cake for me when it comes to video game cameos, presenting three from the Star Wars franchise, Darth Vader, Yoda and the Apprentice. Although originally limited to 2 of the 3 depending on the system you purchased the game for (Yoda for 360 and Vader for PS3) as promised DLC was released for all owners to have the entire trio to create their own epic Star Wars saga battles in beautiful high definition with fluid game play and amazing force powers blended in perfectly. If that wasn’t enough, enjoy several different Star Wars themed stages to fight on.

3 – Nicole-458 in Dead or Alive 4

Even though she isn’t Master Chief, there is no greater joy to a Halo fan such as myself then laying some smack down in a fighting game with a Spartan. Although using a far more non-lethal combat arsenal then Master Chief, Nicole still comes equipped with plasma grenades and the glorious heavy armor suit modeled after the design used in Halo 2. This video game cameo is particularly awesome due to the new play style you get to experience with such a recognizable character you wouldn’t otherwise experience in the original franchise.

4 – The Starcraft Units in Warcraft 3

In the long stretch of time between Starcraft and Starcraft 2, the fans were clawing for any signs of development or new info about their beloved franchise. While many may have been jealous of Warcraft’s priority treatment with both Warcraft 3 and World of Warcraft, at least Blizzard took the time to include fully 3d models of the Zergling, Hydralisk and Marine in the game as hidden units which could be placed in custom maps to satisfy some of that desire. Definitely one of the most surprising and enjoyed video game cameos in the Blizzard games as the amount of WC3 custom maps featuring these units was sky high.

5 – Gordon Freeman in Renegade Ops

Ok, so this one is a bit of a curveball when it comes to cameo and guest appearances in video games, however the reason I choose it while not an incredibly popular game itself, is that once again you are able to experience a genre defying shift with a highly popular character. Not to mention, Gordon Freeman actually has some significant uses and abilities which really add to the game in ways that are more than just ancillary or for kicks only. In all truth, he is the most powerful character in the game in my opinion, then again, if he can single handedly stop the alien invasion of earth, what’s one crazy pyromaniac and his army of Wal-Mart rejects going to be able to do?
