Act I ‘People Lore Book’ Achievement Guide
This guide will cover the first set of the People Lore Books found in Act I of Diablo 3 for the “Quick Study” achievement. There are 43 books to find in the group altogether with this set covering books 1-15 found in terms of natural quest progression.

1. Leah’s Journal, Part 1

Only available during the quest The Falling Star when you first arrive in the town of new Tristram. Head to the back of the Slaughtered Calf Inn to find Leah’s room, which you can enter and find Leah’s Book. The book, when interacted with, drops out a different journal at different times and will respawn again later. For now, it will give you part 1 of her journal for A Quick Study.
2. Deckard Cain’s Journal Part 1

The same deal with Leah, Deckard Cain’s house has a book sitting on the table that when used will spawn a journal depending on where you are in Act I. This one is only available during the Fallen Star Quest once the “Talk to Captain Rumford at the Gate” objective is presented after talking to Leah at the Inn.
3. Old Diary

This journal is confirmed to come out of the Old Keepsake box, which is an object that can spawn randomly in the Old Tristram Road or the Old Ruins. There seems to be an order in which the journals appear out of a particular source, this being the first which is found.
4. Gillian’s Diary, Part 1
This is the second journal for A Quick Study to come out of an Old Keepsake box. The location in which it spawns does not matter and can be anywhere along Old Tristram Road or Old Tristram itself.
5. Leah’s Journal, Part 2
This book is found back in Leah’s room just like the first part, this time after accepting the quest The Legacy of Cain, but before taking the waypoint to the Old Ruins.
6. Adria’s Journal
Impossible to miss, Adria’s Journal is given to you after talking to Leah, once you’ve killed the Captain in the basement of Adria’s Hut during the quest The Legacy of Cain.
7. Lost Journal
Journal number three to pop out of the Old Keepsake Box. It will be necessary to do a few runs of Old Tristram and its road to get all the journals that can possibly fall out of these boxes as you typically only find a couple boxes in each game.
8. Despina’s Journal
Journal number five found from the Old Keepsake Box, if you include the journal which falls out of the box, needed for the Historian of Tristram achievement.
9. Cain’s Old Journal, Part 1
Journal number six from the old keepsake, like I said, will require several runs in this area to find the plethora of available journals here.
10. Cain’s Old Journal, Part 2
Still using the keepsake box as a source, this makes journal number seven to be found, and you can usually find two boxes per run, so this will probably be your 4th or 5th run through the area.
11. Gillian’s Diary, Part 2
The final journal you need to run through keepsake boxes to find. Now it’s time to move on to other journal sources.
12. Lachdanan’s Scroll, Part 1

During the quest The Legacy of Cain as your passing through the Cathedral Level 1, look around for object’s labeled Sribe’s Lecterns, which are little stone pedestals with books sitting atop of them. Activating these objects in this area will drop the first three parts of Lachdanan’s Scroll, this being the first that drops.
13. Lachdanan’s Scroll, Part 2
This will be the second journal to drop from the Scribe’s Lecterns in the Cathedral level 1. Can likely drop from lecterns in the higher levels of the Cathedral as well.
14. Lachdanan’s Scroll, Part 3
This will be the third journal to drop from the Scribe’s Lecterns in the Cathedral levels.You may end up getting this later on, depending on how the lecterns spawn in your game, but you can always rerun a certain level to make sure you’ve grabbed the journals you need.
15. Leah’s Journal, Part 3
You can pick this journal up from Leah’s room after completing The Legacy of Cain quest when you save Cain from Leoric’s Passage. You can talk to Leah to turn in the quest and go ahead and pick up A Shattered Crown (or jump to this point) to find the book sitting on her table.
16. Mira’s Letter to Haedrig
After completing the quest the Shattered Crown, you will find that a small box appears next to Haedrig at his craft shop. Open the Blacksmith’s Belongings to make the letter fall out. You can grab it from this box at any time afterwards.
17. Deckard Cain’s Journal, Part 2
Once you have started the quest Reign of the Black King, head back into Cain’s house and click on the book that sits on his living room table to receive the next and final part of his journal.
18. Lachdanan’s Scroll, Part 4
Part four of Lachdanans Scroll along with the next will most likely be found in the Cathedral levels 2 and 3 as you make your way to the Skeleton King from one of the Scribe’s Lecterns. If you search enough you will probably find enough lecterns that you can also pick up some of the earlier entries if you still need them by the time you make it to he boss fight.
19. Lachdanan’s Scroll, Part 5
The final scroll you’ll receive from the lecterns in the Cathedral, after which will start just dropping gold.
20. Leoric’s Journal, Part 1
Part one of Leoric’s journal can be found from another one of the Scribe Lecterns, however, this time only upon entering the Royal Crypts. Check to the sides of the rooms, the little walkways that stick out to each side, as this is where the lecterns usually are.
21. Leoric’s Journal, Part 2
You may need to make a new game to find a second lectern in the Royal Crypts, however, you can hit the checkpoint right before entering the Crypt of the Skeleton King and remake your game from there. There is a pretty high chance of a lectern spawning right nearby for a quick farm.
22. The Skeleton King
This journal is an impossible to miss, automatic reward for killing the Skeleton King during the Reign of the Black King quest.
23. Leah’s Journal, Part 4
Check Leah’s room again after completing Reign of the Black King and starting Sword fo the Stranger to find part four of her journal.
24. Farmer’s Journal
This journal can be found on the body of Swickard’s Corpse, which is a random spawn object at the Sheltered Cottage in the Fields of Misery. The cottage is a small piece of land that sticks out of the top of the region and takes the same place every time. It can spawn as one of three different versions at random, one being Tinker’s Hovel (see below), a house of slaughtered townsfolk, or the barred door cottage which has Swickard’s Corpse out front.

25. Adenah’s Jottings
Adenah’s Jottings are a journal which can be found inside a small box, much like the Old Keepsake Box, which is found inside a randomly spawning location in the Fields of Misery named House of Curios. See the linked guide for more information on finding the house.
26. Wandering Tinker’s Diary
As mentioned above with the Farmer’s Journal, this is found in one of the three possible spawns of the Sheltered Cottage. If you uncover the Tinker’s Hovel version, you will see a sack lying outside that can be searched for this journal. Don’t forget to go inside to meet the merchant for the market research achievement.
27. Leah’s Journal, Part 5
You can head to Leah’s room at the back of the Inn in New Tristram after starting the quest The Broken Blade to find the fifth part of her journal.
28. Scoundrel’s Journal
You will find the Scoundrel’s Journal in an object named the Stolen Sack. The sack will spawn in the Fields of Misery, pretty close to the entrance to the Old Mill where you first meet the Scoundrel.
29. Kingsport Bill
After aquring the Scoundrel Lyndon into your group as a follower during the quest The Broken Blade, you will be able to talk to him in town or by right clicking his portrait while he follows you. Start the conversation Lyndon’s Origins with him. After the conversation is over, you will be given the Kingsport Bill journal.
30. Leah’s Journal, Part 6
This journal will be back in Leah’s room again after completing the Broken Blade and starting The Doom in Wortham.
31. Priest’s Contemplations, Part 1

During The Doom of Wortham, or just when traveling through the area, look for the Priest’s Satchel right by where you enter the area when taking the ferryman from New Tristram. The journal will be in this sack, which seems to be in this spot consistently. If not, look around the rest of Wortham as it’s a rather small area and free of enemies on top of that if not on the quest.
32. Leah’s Journal, Part 7
You can pick up part seven in the series of Leah’s journals after starting the Trailing the Coven quest from her room at the back of the Slaughtered Calf Inn.
33. Priests Contemplations, Part 2
For this journal, you must have collected the first part and finished the quest The Doom In Wortham. Once you’ve started Trailing the Coven, make a new game, then take the Wortham Chapel Cellar waypoint and find the Priest’s Satchel again. There is only ever one, which is why you must make a new game. Open it up to find part 2 of the Priest’s Contemplations.
34. Hermit’s Ravings

Search around the Caverns of Araneae for Dusty Bags, which are small brown sacks lying on the ground, usually in out of the way places. The Hermit’s Ravings will be the first of three journals which can come out of these bags in the caverns, the other two being for the Historian of Tristram achievement.
35. Notes of Urik the Seer, Part 1

This journal is the first of three parts, all three of which drop from a special bag labeled Urik’s Satchel, which can only be found in the dungeon Cave of the Moon Clan which spawns in the Southern Highlands area. It may take two runs of the cave for all three, since there sometimes is only 2 bags inside.
36. Notes of Urik the Seer, Part 2
You will probably have found the second part of Urik’s notes, which is the second of the three journals to come out of his satchels in the Cave of the Moon Clan, on the second level of the cave, as there is usually one bag in each level.
37. Notes of Urik the Seer, Part 3
This will probably be on your second run of the cave unless you’re lucky and found more than one bag in one of the levels of the cave. The final journal of the three in a series and the last one to also drop from the cave.
38. Scabbard of Talic the Defender
There is a randomly spawning dungeon in the Northern Highlands known as the Watch Tower, which typically, if it’s there, is on the west side of the map, right by its edge. Find this dungeon and head to its second level, where you should find Vendel the Armorsmith. Help him by completing the Scavenged Scabbard event and the journal will fall upon completing it.
39. Leoric’s Journal, Part 3

In all three levels of the Halls of Agony, you will find lecterns in various out of the way locations, at least one on each level and usually a couple on level 3. This is the first of four total journals that can come out of these lecterns.
40. Leoric’s Journal, Part 4

You will probably be at the second level of the Halls of Agony by the time you pick up part 4 of King Leoric’s journals. If you are just looking to pick up books you may have missed the first time around, you can just use the waypoint here to find lecterns since all levels give the same journals, just in a specific order.
41. A Prisoner’s Journal

There is a special event named A Stranger in Need which can spawn right by the exit of the Halls of Agony level 2. It can be kind of rare sometimes, so the best way to farm it would be to hit the checkpoint outside the exit during the quest The Imprisoned Angel, making new games and heading back inside until you run into it. Activate the event and kill the unique monster that eventually spawns to make the journal drop.
42. Queen Asylla’s Journal

Upon entering the Cursed Hold, check the room directly to the side of the entrance that the Queen’s ghost comes out of during the Imprisoned Angel quest, when she asks you to free prisoner’s remains. Check by the bed in this room for a special crate named Queen Asylla’s Chest for the journal.
43. Leoric’s Journal, Part 5

Can potentially drop from any of the lecterns in any of the levels of the Halls of Agony, but most likely to be encountered in level 3 if progressing naturally. This is the third journal to drop, with the fourth being Reply from Cultist Grand Inquisitor for the Taking Notes achievement.
